Palisades Key Club is excited to sponsor an Arbor Day Tree Planting Event:

In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt issued an "Arbor Day Proclamation to the School Children of the United States" about the importance of trees and that forestry deserves to be taught in U.S. schools. This year, Palisades Key Club is continuing that tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day, April 29. Come out to Nockamixon State Park, Main Entrance off Rte. 563, by Parking Lot #1 from 3:00 - 6:00pm. We have 250 trees, 200 silky dogwood and 50 blue spruce to give away and plant.

You will have the opportunity to take the trees home to plant, or you can choose to plant a seedling at the park. Blue spruce grows well while young and matures at 50-75'; 10-'20' spread in the landscape, likes a variety of soil conditions, and is one of the most popular Christmas tree varieties. Full sun is the ideal condition for this tree, meaning it should get at least six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day. They can be used as an excellent wind break, when planted in a row. The silky dogwood is native to PA and is a medium sized shrub at maturity. It grows to 6-10' tall and 6-10' wide at maturity. It yields bluish berry-like drupes which ripen in August and September are desired by many bird species. This shrub also flowers in spring with 4-petaled yellowish-white flowers that attract bees and butterflies. The silky dogwood prefers wet soil and thrives near streams, ponds, and marshes, but will thrive almost anywhere. It is a great starter for any wildlife garden.

The Key Club will also be providing "Planting Packs" to help make your seedling planting be successful. The planting pack will include a bag of mulch and fencing and stakes to protect your seedling while it takes root and grows. All you will need to provide is transport for your seedling to its new home and a shovel to plant the seedling.

We would like to get as many different community organizations involved in this event as possible. If you are part of a Boy Scout/Girl Scout troop, a youth group, a firehouse, church, community group or any other social organization, we would like your help to spread the word about the tree planting event. Please contact Jeremy Wolf, the Key Club adviser for Palisades High School at [email protected] if you would like to get involved.
