DR. O'CONNELL RUBS ELBOWS WITH GOVERNOR WOLF:

Today, Governor Wolf visited the Bucks County IU in Doylestown to check out the vaccination distribution for all educators in the county.  Between March 10th and 20th, 191 Palisades School District  employees have received the J&J (single shot) vaccine.

As one of the few districts open since the beginning of the school year for face to face, as well as online learning, Palisades has so much to be proud of and Dr. O'Connell shared our good news with the Governor. #palisadesstrong

Jacob Wasser

WHAT ARE THEY UP TO NOW?

JACOB WASSER UPDATE FROM LAST WEEKEND!  Jacob won his first consolation match, to guarantee himself a top 8 finish but then dropped a tough 2-1 decision putting him into the 7-8 match.  He gave up 2 big moves in the first period to go down 8-1 but fought back like he always has throughout his career and came back for a 10-8 victory, earning a 7th place finish becoming an All-American!!

Congrats to Jacob Wasser and the Wasser family!

Palisades Cyber Academy

DID YOU KNOW...

When you read or hear about "charter funding reform" in news coming from the state level, it is usually referring to payments to cyber charter (online) schools.  While their expenses DO NOT include expenses in areas such as athletics, food services, nursing services and building/facilities maintenance, their per pupil payment from our district is excessive.  Fees paid by districts to these entities can be used for other things, like advertising (which public schools are not permitted to do).  During the 2020-21 school year, Palisades School District paid $20,305 for every non-special education student and $46,630 for every special education student to charter schools including cyber charters.  This expense impacts our district’s annual budget significantly. Due to increased enrollment and increased tuition rates, the 2021-2022 budget was increased by $1.1 million dollars or 72% over the 2020-2021 budget.

There is legislation being discussed to propose a cap of $9,500 on cyber charter tuition which would result in a significant savings (more than $1 million) to the district.  The Palisades School Board advocates for charter school funding reform as demonstrated by their unanimous approval of the recently adopted resolution.
According to the Wolf administration, Providing an online education costs the same regardless of where the student lives...while Intermediate Units only charge $5,400 per online student. Establishing a single statewide rate ensures that school districts are not charged more than $9,500 per regular education student, reflecting the actual cost of an online education by higher-performing cyber schools. Follow this link for more on charter funding.

If you would like to advocate for the proposed legislation above, please contact your legislators:   https://www.palisd.org/our_district/superintendent_s_office/legislation_advocacy/contact_your_legislator

ENROLLING FOR 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR:  Students who are currently enrolled in a cyber charter school (not Palisades) and wish to enroll in the Palisades Cyber Academy or return to face to face instruction, please contact the Community Relations Office at 610-847-5131, ext. 2401 or email [email protected]
