BUDGET NEWS-SCHOOL BOARD PASSES SLIGHT TAX INCREASE FOR 2019-20:
  • The Board passed the Final Budget for 2019-20 that included a tax increase of 0.61% or 0.7 mills to 115.0 mills in real estate taxes.
  • This increase is approximately $27.84 for the average assessed value at $35,585.
  • The final budget for the 2019-20 school year does not include any reductions in programs or services for Palisades’ students.  No teachers or staff were furloughed.
  • This is the sixth year the School Board will use funds from the Retirement Spike Fund (a savings for mitigating increasing retirement expenses) to cover a significant increase in retirement contributions, topping more than 34% of eligible salaries; all school districts across the state have been facing this problem.  These funds are being utilized to offset this increasing cost, while not overburdening taxpayers with high spikes in the retirement rates.
  • Other projects funded in this budget for the 2019-20 school year include: water heater and HVAC control system upgrades, new backhoe, outdoor lighting upgrades, track replacement, network backbone upgrade, additional security upgrades for all buildings, PHS bleacher replacement, and a paving project at the bus garage parking lot.

PAPER CRAFTING: The Durham Historical Society is sponsoring the first in a series of craft workshops for the community. Valerie M. mARTz, a local artist, will be conducting a hands-on workshop at the Durham Mill on June 22nd from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. She will demonstrate and assist attendees in making paper boxes to store personal treasures. The boxes will be embellished with an image of the Durham Boat and will give participants a sense of satisfaction that they have mastered a craft used in the 18th and 19th centuries when all such containers were made by hand.

In addition, two simple origami figures will be demonstrated and presented. Ms. mARTz is an accomplished craftsman belonging to the PA Guild of Craftsmen and its Bucks and Lehigh Valley chapters. Her work has been featured in publications citing America’s 200 best traditional Craftsmen and she has received a White House Holiday commission. A consummate presenter, she has conducted sessions in several Pennsylvania and Delaware venues.

All supplies and equipment will be provided. The cost of the program is $40.00 per participant and the program is being provided as both a service to the community and as a fundraiser for the renovation of the Durham Mill. A minimum of 5 participants will be needed for the program to be offered and a maximum of 16 participants will be allowed to ensure that participants receive enough individual attention. This will be the only time that this particular session will be offered and the first 16 individuals to send in their registration fee will have their allotted places reserved. Registration can be done on-line using PayPal or credit card at the Historical Society’s website (www.durhamhistoricalsociety.org) or by sending a check to: Durham Historical Society PO Box 52 Durham, PA 18039
