Lydia Bottelier State Champion
WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU, LYDIA!

Palisades senior Lydia Bottelier won the Class 3A girls high jump, with a state-record height of 5-11.5, at the PIAA Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Shippensburg University. (MARK WOGENRICH photos/The Morning Call )

Palisades’ Lydia Bottelier secured a third straight title in the high jump at Saturday’s PIAA Track & Field Championships. She was excited. She was relieved. She wasn’t satisfied.

So Bottelier capped her scholastic career with style.

She set a personal record and a Class 3A state record with one gigantic jump, an effort that elicited immediate tears of joy. Bottelier, a University of Pittsburgh recruit, went up and over 5 feet, 11½ inches.

“I skimmed [the bar] a little bit,” she said, “but as soon as I kicked up my head and saw it staying there I burst into tears. It was so amazing.”

Saturday was a triumphant day in the jumps and field events for athletes from the Lehigh Valley.

Bottelier was a PIAA record-setter and Notre Dame-Green Pond junior Thomas Kitchell was a state gold medalist in the 3A boys discus, a day after he earned silver in the shot put. Kitchell clinched his title with a top throw of 177-4.

Nazareth’s Collin Burkhart, a sophomore, earned silver in the 3A boys javelin and Blue Eagles teammate Junior Karyea, a senior, took home a fifth-place medal in the boys high jump.

Up, up and away: The girls high jump title belonged to Bottelier after she cleared 5-9, as second-place medalist Amelia McCloy of Central Mountain exited at 5-8. Bottelier instructed event officials to set the bar at 5-11½ — one-quarter inch higher than the previous state mark set by Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood in 2013.

Bottelier wasted no time in breaking the record.

“Surprisingly, I wasn’t that nervous,” she said. “Right before each jump, my coach [Josh Kline] yells out two things I need to focus on for that jump. He said speed and lean, so that was what I was thinking of.

“My practices Thursday were not good but they never really are before this meet. I had to stay out of my own head and focus on what I could do. I was clean all the way until I attempted 6-feet, so I didn’t miss anything until after I broke the record.”

After winning back-to-back state titles in Class 2A, Bottelier wasn’t too worried about Palisades’ jump up to 3A this season.

“I’ve competed against all these girls before,” she said, “and we all get along really well and there’s a lot of great competition. It’s not really as much who I’m competing against, it’s about performing my best.”

Bottelier ran in the 200-meter semifinals about 15 minutes after her final try at 6-feet. She finished fifth in her heat, and failed to qualify for the final.

That hardly mattered much on this day.

Asked about Saturday being her final competition in a Palisades uniform, Bottelier became emotional. “This is my last time with my team,” she said, “and they’ve given me so much and mean so much to me.”
