PALISADES MIDDLE SCHOOL RECOGNIZED AS A SCHOOL TO WATCH:

On Tuesday, May 14th, Palisades Middle School students, teachers, staff, administrators and school board directors came together to celebrate a significant award for middle level schools.  Palisades was awarded the PA Don Eichhorn:  Schools to Watch Award.  Palisades joins an elite group of 41 schools in the Commonwealth and 480 schools across the nation to receive such a prestigious honor.

Schools to Watch recognizes exemplary middle grade schools for Academic Excellence, Developmental Responsiveness, Social Equity and Organizational Structures and Processes.

The organization also recognizes schools with strong leadership and teachers who work together to improve curriculum, instruction, and assessment.  “Through this hard work and accountability, our school has demonstrated the ability to improve and grow,” said Dr. Karl Scheibenhofer, the school’s principal at this week’s celebration.

Dr. Bridget O’Connell said at the school celebration, “this award recognizes what I have always known.  At Palisades, we are committed to the success and achievement of each and every one of our students. We have learned much through the process and look forward to what PALMS will look like in the years to come.”

About Schools to Watch:

The Schools to Watch selection process is based on a written application that required schools to show how they met criteria developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform.  Schools that appeared to meet the criteria were then visited by state teams, which observed classrooms, interviewed administrators, teachers, students, and parents, and looked at achievement data, suspension rates, quality of lessons, and student work.  Schools are recognized for a three-year period, and at the end of three years, they must demonstrate progress on specific goals in order to be re-designated. Unlike the Blue Ribbon recognition program, “Schools to Watch” requires schools to not just identify strengths, but to also focus on areas for continuous improvement; thus the three year re-designation.
