Planting with a Purpose

Submission by Mr. Jeremy Wolf, PHS Science Teacher

On Friday, April 9th and Saturday, April 10th, a massive collaboration between students and environmental stewards of the greater Palisades community came together to plant trees with a purpose. The project began almost a year ago when the Nurture Nature Center in Easton reached out to teachers at Palisades High School (Mr. Wolf and Mr. Fedell) seeking an opportunity to teach students about climate change, environmental stewardship, and the role of planting native trees in carbon dioxide capture and sequestration. Soon, a partnership was born between the Nurture Nature Center and Palisades High School through the school's Key Club, Chief Science Officers, and STEM Outreach Club. As part of the project, students learned about carbon dioxide's role in climate change and the species of trees native to the Palisades community. They participated in virtual workshops hosted by local experts on native plants, sustainable growing techniques, and habitat restoration. Students surveyed the planting site, and based upon site conditions chose 11 varieties of native trees and shrubs, from a list of hundreds of native species, to plant. Through collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) a site located near the Park Office within Nockamixon State Park was selected and a mutually agreed upon date was chosen.

Over two days, 23 students of Palisades High School, over a dozen Bucks County Master Watershed Stewards and park rangers from Nockamixon worked together to plant 55 trees in an area decimated by the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive species that kills native Ash trees. Not only has this refreshed the ecosystem of the park, but also nurtured a love for the local ecosystem for all who participated in this project.

This project was supported by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Planet Stewards program and will continue into next year. A number of trees were donated by Octoraro Nursery and custom apparel for students was sponsored by Advanced Optics in Hellertown. This grant-funded project will continue through the efforts of the Nurture Nature Center, students at Palisades High School, their club advisors, and anticipated partnership with the Springfield Environmental Action Committee and Springfield Township.

The Federal and State Income Tax Annual Return filing deadline was extended to May 17, 2021.  Keystone will accordingly not impose additional late filing penalty and interest to local taxpayers who file by May 17, 2021 so as to align the local filing deadline with the extended PA and the IRS filing deadlines.

This extension does not apply to any other tax payments.  Employer filing deadlines for reporting payroll withholdings are not changed.  Similarly, quarterly estimates for 1st quarter 2021 have not been extended.

Taxpayers contacting you with questions regarding the filing deadline should be directed to Keystone’s website, www.KeystoneCollects.com or to Keystone’s Taxpayer Services Department at (888) 328-0565.

On behalf of Steve Shreiner, President of Shreiner Tree Care

Good afternoon,

Spring is finally here and with it come new opportunities. As mentioned in my previous communication, Shreiner Tree Care is seeking graduating students, and/or students 18 years of age, who enjoy working outdoors, thrive in a team setting, don’t shy away from responsibility, and embrace a learning environment that will nurture new skills. For these students, we can provide the foundation for a secure financial future and foster a new trade.

Attached please find our flyer with a brief overview of the company, areas of focus, and employment benefits. The positions available are entry-level and full-time. Please note myself and my team are available to interview students by phone and/or Zoom, as well as in person. I would be delighted to connect with you to and discuss the opportunities available to your students. Feel free to call my cell phone at with any questions 610.246.6070.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT WORTHWHILE THRIFT:

You probably already know that the revenue from Worthwhile Thrift is funneled into our programs for survivors, but what you might not know is that Worthwhile Thrift also functions as a place of employment for the women in The Well program.  It's where they get their feet wet in the resume-building, application process, and employment training skills as they work their way through the program.

To help support the store, Worthwhile Wear is making April "Customer Appreciation Month."  In the final week of April, we will be raffling off a gift basket.  Basically, for every $20 spent at the thrift store, a customer can fill out a slip to be entered to win the gift basket.

This is where you come in!

If you're interested in rallying a team or working alone, would you like to assemble a themed gift basket to be raffled out at the store in the final week of April?  If so, we're looking for something valued at about $150 with a theme of your choosing (remember, the basket will be awarded to a Worthwhile Thrift customer, not to the women at The Well).  With your completed basket, we'll also need a list of the basket contents with an estimated value of each item.

Attached is a list of themed baskets we've used in the past, but you are encouraged to brainstorm.  Gift Basket Ideas

Let me know if you are interested.  The drop off location for the completed baskets is: 5835 Easton Road, Plumsteadville, PA 18949.
