3 school districts, Bucks IU awarded $25K workforce grants
From our Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Michael Donnelly: “We are thrilled to have received the Teacher in the Workplace Grant of $25,000 to support our educational efforts in the Palisades School District. This grant essentially provides additional opportunities for faculty and students to engage with local businesses, thereby applying theory that is learned in the classroom and seeing it in practice in a hands-on setting. We have continued to develop our Career Pathway Programs at Palisades High School over the past few years. This additional support through the Teacher in the Workplace Grant will offer us the opportunity to provide more first-hand experiences for our students and teachers by supporting travel expenses and substitute costs. As we continue to move our pathway programs forward, an advisory board will be established to facilitate the building of partnerships and the exploration of new opportunities in various fields. Finally, this grant will be used to help procure industry-based credentials for students which would enhance their resume for seeking employment not only after they graduate, but while still in high school, as well.”
Palisades currently has six (6) Career Pathways focused on these areas - medicine, engineering, education, global studies, vocational technical studies and business.
FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA UPDATE:
Congratulations to these students who completed a project-based event (E-Business) and were just informed that they qualified for the State Competition in Hershey, PA!!! They are: Maura Campbell, Collin Schaufele, and Hailey Diehl.
They will be joining Ollie Olmstead, Melody Weightman, Camila O'Donnell, Allie Gamello, and Sarah Goggin.

SPOTLIGHT ON POSITIVE SCHOOL WIDE BEHAVIOR PROGRAMS:
The Positive School-Wide Behavior Intervention and Supports Program (PSWBIS), now implemented at Durham Nockamixon, Springfield, Tinicum and PALMS, teaches and models expected school behavior in an effort to improve student achievement and promote a safe and positive climate where students are responsible, respectful, and kind. Springfield Elementary has been honored two years in a row, and Durham Nockamixon was honored last year for implementing this program with fidelity.
What does the School Wide Positive Support Behavior Program (SWPBIS) look like in our schools?
- Students, staff, and parents are taught the expectations throughout the school year.
- Expectations are displayed throughout the school.
- Students and staff are able to state the expectations.
- Staff members model positive behavior expectations for students.
- Students are reinforced for displaying appropriate behavior in school.
How can parents help with Positive Behavior Support?
- Reinforce school-wide expectations with your child by discussing their school day and how they modeled positive behavior.
- Keep communication between you and your child’s teacher active throughout the school year.
- Become a volunteer and participate in school activities including celebrations.
- Celebrate your child’s accomplishments when they bring home a positive note.
What are the benefits of family involvement with Positive Behavior Support?
- Positive student motivation
- Improved attitudes about school work
- Students earn better grades, increased attendance and homework completion
Student Acknowledgement System:
Each day ten randomly chosen teachers and staff members at each school are given a token to bestow on a student who is displaying any of the expected behaviors which show students being respectful, responsible, or safe/kind. Teachers and staff will recognize students meeting these expectations by presenting them with a token and specific feedback on the action they are being recognized for during the course of the day. Students who receive a token will take home a certificate so parents are aware of what behavior their child demonstrated and why. When a student receives a token, they will celebrate their accomplishment proudly by going to the office:
- To sign the Celebrity Book
- Pick a number from the jar
- Hang their token on the matching number displayed on the school's Wall of Fame
Once an entire row is filled in any direction, the ten students whose names are listed in that row will receive a reward. After the row is filled and rewarded, tokens are taken down and the chart begins again.
This program is at varying stages of implementation in the four schools. Thanks to everyone for making this program so exciting and engaging for students! It is undoubtedly making a difference in student behavior.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION COMING SOON! Incoming kindergarten students must be age 5 before September 1, 2020. The new student link will be posted on our website in early February. The screening dates will be March 24, 26 and April 6 from 4-7:30PM and March 27 from 8:45AM until 3:15PM. Kindergarten screening will take approximately 30 minutes. When the link is available (coming soon) on our site, you will be able to make the appointment for you and your child. In addition to the screening and presenting any needed paperwork, a nurse and counselor will also be available on those dates for any questions or concerns you may have.
If you are registering a student for kindergarten, we do require a copy of the child’s birth certificate, an immunization record and three (3) proofs of residency - a lease or property tax bill, along with two other forms, ie., driver’s license, insurance, utility bill, etc. If the child and family are living with a resident, the attached form (page 1 only) must be submitted in place of the lease/tax bill. FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS - League of Women Voters Holding High School Poster Contest
The League of Women Voters of Bucks County invites Bucks County high school seniors to enter the 2020 High School Senior Poster Contest. The contest is open to students enrolled in their senior year in a Bucks County public or private high school or in their senior year of home-schooling in Bucks County.
Students are asked to create posters illustrating their feelings about voting and the democratic process, in keeping with this year’s theme “What Voting Means to Me.” The posters must be nonpartisan and free from political bias and affiliation. The contest is now open and the deadline is February 28. An independent panel of recognized representatives from the local art community, collegiate art education and the League of Women Voters will judge the art on relevant criteria. The winner will be announced April 30. A $500 prize will be awarded.
